iPhoneNotes

iPhoneNotes Icon

Since apple is building and updating the iPhone software they have forgotten to deal with the Notes on your iPhone. They have just backed them up and thats not enough for me. I like to edit my notes from the iPhone on my Mac. So I built this small application to do that.

iPhoneNotes allows you to edit your notes from the iPhone on your Mac. You can add, remove, edit and backup them.

iPhoneNotes is Free software and you can download it here:

  • Installed OpenSSH on your iPhone
  • iPhone Firmware 1.1.3 or higher

    Great app! Thanks :-)

this may sound stupid, but how about a brief tutorial?

Loading notes to where, saving notes to where? Backing up where?

Simple concepts that have different meanings depending on the context.

Setting up SSHD and BSD subsystem on 1.1.4 took 3 hours, almost made the app not worth downloading, but I like it so far.

    Hello

Worked fine for me under 1.1.4 Firmware.
    Thanks.

Does it work with the Touch?

  6. Jon responded on 02 Apr 2008 at 11:21 #

Does it work on the iPod Touch?

  7. George responded on 02 Apr 2008 at 20:58 #

Is there a version for Windows?

  8. Alex responded on 03 Apr 2008 at 01:34 #

Why are you only coding it for 10.5?
Would be great if it was available for 10.4 too!

  9. Moritz responded on 04 Apr 2008 at 21:43 #

doesn’t work with my 16gig ipod touch… says it connects but for hours. and now it deleted all my notes on my itouch… ? :(

  10. Moritz responded on 04 Apr 2008 at 21:49 #

my fault: the known_hosts file listed two or more entries for the ip. now the mac-app lists the correct notes but my ipod notes-app doesn’t work anymore… it shows only an empty list. after some seconds I’m back at my homescreen…

  11. Moritz responded on 04 Apr 2008 at 21:52 #

wow… this killed my ipod completely… after a reboot I am shown the “edit home screen” msg. then the springboard restarts… I’ll have to put my ipod back in recovery mode and to reinstall it… nice little app…

  12. V1ru8 responded on 04 Apr 2008 at 23:04 #

@Moritz I can’t imagine that my app is responsible for your problem. I think there must be somehting else.
But you could try delete the notes database (/var/mobile/Library/Notes) on your phone, the Notes application will then create a new one.

  13. Kurt responded on 04 Apr 2008 at 23:20 #

Excellent Idea. Is there a Wish List anywhere? In the meantime, here are a few suggestions (while keeping in mind that iPhoneNotes hasn’t reached version 1.0 yet) . . .
    1. Remember size and screen position of window
    2. No prefs - one could be “Change ID & Password” so we all aren’t using root -> alpine - at least include this feature somewhere.
    3. Include a reference to the online tutorial
If these things are all on the list of things to come, then please accept them as affirmations. — Thanks.

This finds and displays my notes just fine. When I change my notes in the Finder, using this app, and then ’save’ the edited notes to my iPhone, it acts like it does it, but it really doesn’t. So… So far I have only been able to view my notes with this app (which I can already do with the actual ‘Notes’ app on my iPhone ;-)) but not change them - I can change them alright, but the changes aren’t saved to the phone. A problem with permissions? Anybody have any ideas?

    hallo,
great idea, but it’s working bad.
When I try to manually add notes, there is a big jam:

    I add first note, ok
    I add second notes, ok
I add third notes, the second goes blank
I add fourth note, it adds two lines and my first note disappear
    and so on.

Shall i wait for a stable version before donate ? :-)

  17. V1ru8 responded on 07 Apr 2008 at 19:58 #

Thank you for that detailed description! I will have a look at it. But i don’t think that i will have time before the next weekend.

  18. paolo responded on 08 Apr 2008 at 10:12 #

Hallo, I really would like to use your software, but:
due to the previous problem, I tried to build a new note with all my notes as one. Result is a big note, let’s say 20KB in rtf.
iPhoneNotes let me build that and let me upload to the iphone. In iPhone I can only find the title… SOB!

  19. V1ru8 responded on 08 Apr 2008 at 11:49 #

@paolo sry i can’t reproduce your error. I can add the notes without any problem. Do you use the newest version? (0.5)
It could be a problem if you use some appostrophs in your text. (but it will be fixed in the next version)

  20. paolo responded on 09 Apr 2008 at 14:57 #

    Correct !!!
As soon as i removed appostophs, big note has been uploaded !
    Nice step ahead.
    Bye

  21. V1ru8 responded on 09 Apr 2008 at 15:51 #

great! I hope I can release a new version this weekend. So you can use appostrophs.

  22. Diggedydog responded on 10 Apr 2008 at 09:34 #

Worked wonderfully on my 1.4 iPhone … but this weekend I used Pwnage to re-upgrade and now whenever run iPhoneNotes and attempt to download the Notes database from my iPhone I simply get the spinning wheel and “downloading the Notes database from your iPhone” message. Anyone else PWN’ed and got the same problem? - have deleted known hosts on my MacBook Pro “just in case” but no improvement. Am using 0.5. I find iPhoneNotes so useful that I am prepared to un-PWNage and go back to simple jailbroken etc. 1.4 if this will fix things for me. Help???!!!

  23. V1ru8 responded on 10 Apr 2008 at 11:34 #

hmm can you post your log window? (Window -> Log Window) that would be helpfully

  24. Hardloaf responded on 14 Apr 2008 at 17:41 #

Nice idea, but to make it fully functional you should also add an ability to sync notes over USB using Apple’s MobileDevice.framework - the same way like iTunes and iPHUC access iPhone. The reason is simple - in many cases it’s a lot simpler to plug cable than setup wifi between computer and iPhone.

  25. V1ru8 responded on 14 Apr 2008 at 20:07 #

@Hardloaf Thank you for the request. I’m working on it but in the next 2~3 weeks I have lot of assessments at the university so I haven’t much time to work on iPhoneNotes and the MobileDevice.framwork is not really public so it’s not so easy to deal with it.
I think also that is really important because then it is eventually possible to use not jailbroken iPhones with iPhoneNotes.

  26. Paul responded on 15 Apr 2008 at 00:49 #

iPhone Notes isn’t seeing my iPhone. Need help please. Thank you.

  27. Frank responded on 21 Apr 2008 at 15:41 #

Tip for anyone who is trying to use iphonenotes after they had restored an iphone to factory settings. You need to go into your ~/.ssh/known_hosts file and delete the old entries for your iPhone, otherwise iphonenotes will hang on trying to ssh in. Not sure how this would be handled in the program but it’s definitely something that a few people will encounter.

Your software askes for the password of my iPhone. The only one I have is to opening 4 digit number to open the phone.

    Can you help?

  29. V1ru8 responded on 21 Apr 2008 at 17:11 #

    Try user: root
    and password: alpine
    these are the iPhone defaults!

    sftp launch path is /usr/bin/sftp.
    Slave terminal device is /dev/ttys000.
    Master Device is 16.
    Connecting to Macintosh-001CB3421DEF.local….
Warning: the RSA host key for ‘macintosh-001cb3421def.local.’ differs from the key for the IP address ‘192.168.0.107′

    Matching host key in /Users/brutus/.ssh/known_hosts:6
Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? yes

the above is shown in the log. the iphonenotes doesn’t seem to be able to connect to the phone and nothing happens… So far, I have no luck in using the app.

  31. V1ru8 responded on 29 Apr 2008 at 07:38 #

try to delete your known host file ( /Users/brutus/.ssh/known_hosts ) and then retry to load the notes with iPhoneNotes

Nice tool for its limits and the precious time that the developer has. I am also a developer and I can appreciate the practical considerations when developing free software.

The only thing that keeps me from using iPhoneNotes is that I cannot get started. I have a large accumulation of Palm Desktop / jpilot notes that I can get into a variety of different formats (E.g. CSV, XLS, folder of text files) but iPhoneNotes has no import function yet.

It is a pity that the iPhoneNotes repository is an SQLLLite database (overkill, IMHO). If the repository had been simply a folder with individual text files (one for each note), this tool would be more flexible and no import issues would have ever existed in the first place; drop the text in and sync, right? Exporting is a nice to have but not critical in a free tool.

Will you ever publish your source code?

Keep up the good work. All the best to you.

What a great piece of software! Thanks so much for taking the time to do what should be included somewhere in Apple Mail or iCal. Worked great…once I deleted my known_hosts file.

Great app. I have a couple of comments.

    i) When using Notes on the iPhone after editing and saving, the notes themselves appear in an odd order and this does not change even when edited on the iPhone. Prior to using iPhoneNotes the list order was updated to when last edited.

ii) Couple of spelling mistakes on the buttons for loading (downlaoding and cancle) only a minor issue(!)

Other that that what a great app and what a timesaver.
    Keep up the good work.
    Radar
